Sport

Our highly qualified sports teacher, and his dynamic team, believe in an inclusive, all-round sports education to keep body and mind healthy. Whatever the skill level, there is a sport at The Minster School York to suit every young person, whether in a team, or as an individual pursuit.

Our minibuses can often be spotted transporting pupils to a variety of matches across the Yorkshire area, with an emphasis on participation and having fun. The school encourages a competitive spirit, with a sense of fair play.

The major autumn and spring sports for our Prep girls are Netball and Hockey, replaced by Rounders and Athletics in the summer. For boys, autumn is dominated by Football, Rugby and Hockey, while summertime is for Cricket and Athletics. Other sports including Badminton are introduced if very bad weather affects sports fields.

All students take part in sports lessons on at least two afternoons per week. Younger pupils have one afternoon for team games and another for swimming lessons, plus gym and music & movement sessions with their class teacher. From Year 5, both afternoon sports sessions are devoted to team games.

We have green space in front of school for practise and some afterschool sports clubs. Other facilities we are lucky enough to have regular access to are: Heworth Cricket Club, York Sports Village and University of York’s running track at Heslington Campus.

Bespoke, VIP-access, extra-curricular trips to football trophy rooms, athletics stadiums and to watch a variety of sports matches, are all on offer. After-school sports opportunities include Judo, fencing and horse riding.
